Learning Goal: I’m working on a management discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
No later than Sunday, please respond to this thread by writing a thorough and thoughtful 250-word essay that answers one of the following questions:
Discuss the significance of the impact of having a nonviolent protest movement in the emerging age of television news coverage, in the midst of the Cold War, and in the midst of record prosperity for the US as whole. How and why did this strategy prove to be successful in achieving civil rights gains for African Americans in the years between 1955 and 1965, especially in light of the US’ and the Soviet Union’s Cold War propaganda?
Explain how the relationship between the US and the USSR turned from friends to enemies in the post-World War II period. Why was it not possible for either superpower to gain an advantage over the other one in the years between 1947 and 1980? What made the Cold War such a dangerous time? Did the Cold War really end with the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991?
Describe the significance of the Red Scare in the US in the 1940s and 1950s. Were there really USSR sympathizers and Communist spies everywhere? What happened to the people caught up in the net of investigations and trials? What ultimately caused Joseph McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee to decline in popularity for its work during the Red Scare?
Your Initial Post is expected to be a 250-word prose essay, with a thesis statement and 2-5 paragraphs supporting and explaining the thesis. Explain what you learned in your own words, and do your best to synthesize the authors’ analyses into your own original analysis; do not rely exclusively on quotations from the readings to make your points. Please change the title of your post to something unique. Note which question you choose to answer.
Your Initial Post should be up by the end of the on Sundays.
So that our discussion is thoughtful and sustained, each peer response must be at least 100 words in length. Your Peer Responses should be posted by the end of the week on Tuesdays.
