Create Chapter Research Brief Objectives The purpose of this exercise is to examine the underlying research that supports a chapter that you have read in a book that your read for the earlier reading assignment. What we are interested in is assessing: How credible is the underlying research? How well does the secondary source (i.e., the book you previously read) interpret the original findings? As a secondary benefit, the exercise will give you experience in tracking down references using the USF library system, and will subsequently provide an introduction to the peer-review process. Procedure To complete this exercise, perform the following steps: From the first 20 chapters of Informing Science Volume 1 Download Volume 1 or Volume 2 Download Volume 2, select a chapter or section of a chapter that has between 5 and 10 external article references. These references can be found in the reference section at the end of each chapter. In an MS Word document, write your own summary–no more than a page single-spaced–of the key points from the section you studied. Acquire full-text electronic copies of the articles referenced in that section from the USF library. If PDF versions are not available, print the text into a PDF file. Skim (or read) the references and add a table to your word document with three columns: Citation: The APA-formatted citation for the reference Credibility: How credible do you perceive the reference to be. Factors that you might consider are the nature of the outlet, background of the author, and quality of evidence presented. Fidelity: The degree to which the secondary source (i.e., the book you previously read) appears to capture what the reference actually said. For any references that do not appear to be available in the library, including the Citation and then note the fact that the reference could not be found in the other columns. When the Word document is complete, save it as a PDF file. Create a PDF binder containing your original document, followed by the articles. Attach the combined PDF to this assignment and upload it. Be sure to complete this assignment by the specified deadline so that the peer review can take place on schedule.
